"Poor care of our mum"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / General Surgery

(as a relative),

Earlier this month my 69 year old mum was admitted to Inverclyde hospital with suspected gastric bug and was admitted to H north for treatment .

During her admission it was discovered that she had some abnormalities in her scans and blood work which was investigated.

4 days later my mum was given the devastating diagnosis that she has advanced cancer spread to her liver and Dr would need to investigate the primary cancer.

This diagnosis was given to my mum late in day around 4:30 pm, there was no nurse in the room when she was told and at no time did any member of the nursing staff follow up with my mum after being given devastating news. She remained in hospital for another 24 hours and never at any time did any nurse on ward discuss this diagnosis with my mum or ask if she needed anything or call any of her family . My mum had to call her family on her own and give this news compounded with this was the fact that our dad died Feb this year and mum was in a similar room to one she watched her husband die in.

The experience my mother had during her time in hospital affected her deeply and with love and support of her family we made sure to get her home as quick as possible and try to repair the damage done.

As professional nurses our code of conduct expects that we put patients first and make sure that patients physical, mental and psychosocial needs are met. These needs are basics and should be foundation of every nurse. Our mum she was left to cope with this terrible news with no compassion or care .

I really hope that by raising this issue to ward manager that issue will be addressed as it is very clear that there is an educational need within this unit.

Dear Devastated family

I am really saddened to read of your experience, this is certainly not the standard of care and compassion that we strive to deliver. Your experience clearly caused further distress at what was already a really difficult time and for this I am truly sorry.

As this is an open forum and anonymous,I would find it really helpful if you could contact me at Marie.Farrell@ggc.scot.nhs.uk to give me more details about your mum. that will allow me to fully review the issues you have highlighted.

Please be assured that I will share your post with the ward staff.

Once again please accept my sincere apologies.
