"Extremely rude, abrupt and arrogant receptionist."

About: Whipps Cross University Hospital / Accident and emergency

Me and my Children's' father have been visiting the A and E department every three days to do the redressing of our three year old son's burnt hand. On one occasion (10/12/2017) I came in and got a ticket. Once my ticket was called I was asked a few questions by a receptionist who's name I had wished I had taken note of. The receptionist asked me a set of questions which I answered and the final question was 'if someone came in and asked of my whereabouts, do I give permission for the hospital to tell them'?. It was asked very quickly and I got a bit confused, so I answered No. The receptionist looked at me and gave me a very weird look.I laughed and said I don't know why that was asked. The receptionist suddenly became very angry and started talking in a very rude manner in front of my three year old and four year old. The receptionist completely shocked me and started saying 'well let me tell you why we ask that, so on and so forth... I was left gobsmacked and got up to leave immediately. The receptionist also mentioned that that the fact that I answered No to the questions says a lot!! I was left in complete shock and said that patients don't deserve to be talked to like that. After the nurse treated my sons hand I complained to them about this particular receptionist and the nurse spoke to with them immediately. So this particular receptionist knows who they are. No patient deserves to be spoken to like that and if questions need to be asked they should be asked nicely and gently. Hospitals need to carefully select the people they employ, and if complaints like these come forward then action needs to be taken because patients do not deserve this treatment from rude and abrupt people.

Thank you for taking the time to send in your comments. We are very sorry to read of your poor experience at our A&E reception desk. We pride ourselves in providing safe and compassionate care to all of our patients and for you to feel you didn't receive this is unnacceptable. Thank you for raising it with the nurse and if you would like us to investigate this further, please get in touch with our PALS team on WXpals@bartshealth.nhs.uk.

Kind regards

Barts Health NHS Trust
