"Nursing care"

About: Southmead Hospital / Neurology

(as a service user),

My sister who has been in Southmead ICU following a car crash  was transferred to Neurology recently. With a  fractured C1/neck and wearing a collar and with untold brain injuries she was left alone and as a result she fell out of her bed and had to call for help as no-one was around.

We are not residents of Bristol and have for the last 2 weeks been promised she would be transferred to QMC in Nottingham (a nearer hospital to us). She is scheduled to be moved tomorrow but now needs a CT scan because of how the nursing care has been. As I write (almost 5 pm) she hasn't had that scan.  I have found it impossible to speak to anyone in neurology - it would help if someone even answered the phone.

With ICU however I have nothing but praise for the team of dedicated staff working there. I suspect it comes down to funding of NHS but in this day and age to not have enough staff on a high dependency unit is criminal.

Dear Family Member,

Thank you for providing your feedback about your sister's care following her transfer to Neurology.

I am very sorry to hear that your sister fell out of her bed, and there was no one around to assist her, clearly this is not acceptable and is very serious.

I can confirm that the Advice & Complaints Team have been contacted by a family member direct regarding this incident and the family member has now spoken with the Lead Nurse for the Division who is looking into this matter.

Please be assured that we are taking this very seriously.

If you would like to contact me directly to discuss this in more detail, please contact 0117 414 4567, or you can email us Complaints@nbt.nhs.uk

Please accept my sincere apologies that we have added to what is already a very stressful situation for you all.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kind comments regarding the care your sister received in the ICU, which has been fed back to them.

Yours sincerely, Sue Needs, Deputy Advice & Complaints Team Manager.
