"Hip replacement-excellent experience"

About: Lister Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

I recently had a full hip replacement . Before the operation, communication was very good and consultant visit and preop checks thorough including a suggested additional visit to GP for chest check and xray because of a minor infection. . On the day I was admitted the atmosphere was calm, quiet and efficient, again with excellent communication and pros and cons of anaesthetic choices clearly stated. Team were all considerate, respectful and reassuring throughout and this continued through recovery and transference to ward.

All additional staff I met-nurses, physios, admin, porters cleaners etc were pleasant and helpful.I had a single room which was open enough not to feel isolated - lovely to have own bathroom. As expected, I was encouraged to eat and become mobile as soon as possible which I did- but was unlucky to unexpectedly black out whilst standing, breaking my nose on floor-however, response was brilliant with full range of tests scans and xrays carried out very quickly and a follow up appointment with Ear Nose Throat dept. arranged to follow very soon after discharge.Again checks were thorough and I went on the operation list with freedom to opt out later if preferred.I went for the preop the same day and was directed to A and E after asking about swollen leg and unexplained weight gain- - this led to a further series of thorough checks to ensure no possibility of deep vein thrombosis.

I did not have to wait more than about thirty minutes in any department.Once cleared, the doctor gave clear instructions about doses of paracetamol to support reduction of water on my leg.

A few days later I returned for procedure on broken nose in ENT dept.and was thoroughly checked. The pros and cons were clearly outlined and I was able to decide that there was no need to go ahead as it was setting straighter than had first appeared, and there should be no future complications.

I appear to be making a very good recovery indeed. I am due to have a knee replacement soon. I feel extremely confident after my first experience at the Lister and won' t hesitate to return.
