"Royal Alexandria Hospital Paediatric Dept"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

I was referred to the paediatric dept at this hospital on monday night by the GP as I was told by the gp that the queen elizabeth childrens hospital was full and had no beds and so could not take new patients. I cant say me or my husband were pleased as travelling to paisley was a much further journey as we were already at the southern general, but had no choice but to get my son seen as the dr was very worried about his breathing.

But it was worth the extra inconvenience. The staff at paisley were wonderful. We were seen straight away and the nurses were so good with my son. Lewis and Victoria were looking after us and even though they looked really busy were really kind and looked like they were actually enjoying their job. The dr was good and was working really hard to see children quickly and we got home that night.
I was talking to one nurse and they explained that the ward is potentially going to close soon and doesn't accept patients at weekends anymore. I know my one story probably wont make a difference but felt I had to ask please don't close this ward! I don't know where we would have been sent to if it had been closed on monday night and dread having to drive even further from home! Thank you to the staff who looked after us xxx

Dear Stargirl91

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on Care Opinion.

I am really pleased to hear that your son was cared for so well by the team in the Royal Alexandra Hospital and that he was treated quickly and recovered well enough to get home later that night. Our teams are very focused on providing high standards of care, treating children quickly and where possible letting them get back to the comfort of their own home. As you point out they work in very busy departments and still manage to convey their passion and kindness when treating young patients and supporting their parents. Our General Manager and Chief Nurse will pass on your appreciation to the team and to Lewis and Victoria in particular. I am sure they will be delighted to hear the impact they had on you and your son.

I am sorry that you had to travel to the RAH on this occasion for your son to be treated. It is only in exceptional circumstances that the Royal Hospital for Children has to divert patients and the safety of patients is always the basis for decisions such as this.

At this time, a decision is awaited on the future of the paediatric inpatient Ward 15 at RAH. Please be assured that our senior managers and clinicians are all fully involved in discussions to ensure that all children and their families continue to be assessed and treated in the right place within the appropriate timescale.

I hope your son is continuing to recover well at home.

Best wishes

Pam
