"21st Century Facilities-19th Century Treatment"

About: North East London Treatment Centre Care UK

My appointment was a bit of administrative disaster (not the fault of the staff - NHS booking team need to get their facts right), so I was offered a gastroscopy date for 16/12/17, which was reasonable. However, I was informed that all gastroscopies are done without sedation - only a spray of local anaesthetic (which doesn’t work for everyone)! I just could not believe what I was hearing.

Having had this procedure before I know that sedation is essential unless you really can withstand having a big rubber camera tube shoved into your stomach. I was then informed that the Centre had limited resources and was only licenced for basic procedures. Good thing they don’t do dentistry! So although this is a magnificent Centre with a very professional nursing staff, it is badly let down by poor management who appear to be living in the 19th century as far as medical care is concerned. Even my chiropodist absolutely insists on making sure any uncomfortable procedures are properly managed and will insist on the necessary staff if required, yet this establishment has a problem. Hopefully my GP can refer me to a proper and professional hospital with staff who have had the necessary training.

Clearly, this centre, although excellent in other respects, needs to be brought kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

Thank you for taking the time to write to say that we did not meet your expectations on your visit to our unit on 13/12/2017.

We take these matters very seriously and would like to offer reassurance that we will talk to everyone involved in your procedure today.

All of our procedures are done with the offer of sedation. Throat spray is administered initially and then sedation is offered if the patient cannot tolerate the procedure.

The procedure is then carried out by an experienced consultant, who will carefully monitor the progress of the camera into the patient’s stomach.

As a treatment centre, dentistry was part of the services that we delivered. These patients were also offered the choice of sedation or a full general anaesthetic, a choice that we cannot offer to Endoscopy patients, as we are not licensed to give a general anaesthetic in this environment.

We at NELTC pride ourselves on offering a 21st century service to all of our users as standard, and can assure you that all our staff are fully trained and completely qualified in all areas that they work.

Please do not hesitate to contact Marianne Lawley, Endoscopy Lead, on 020 8598 4633, if you would like to discuss your experience further.
