"If I didn't have a history of substance misuse, would this story have had a different end??"

About: Arch initiative

(as the patient),

I am an ex addict who went in recovery about 10 months ago at Arch Initiative in St Helens. I went to my community drug team (CDT) and was asked if I wanted an HEP test, I took that test and it came out positive.

To the best of my knowledge, I had HEP C but what I wasn't told was how long I had had it for or how severe it was and how much damage had been done.

To date there has been no follow up by my CDT who employs NHS nurses. They just told me I was HEP C+ without a session regarding treatment.

I was left feeling confused and afraid and I thought to myself, If I didn't have a history of substance misuse, would this story have had a different end.

I now sit here waiting and hoping that maybe if I am good, I may get treatment

Thank you for your posting. I am very grateful to you for taking the time to feedback your experience. I am very disappointed that you did not receive a pre and post test consultation to prepare you for your positive Hepatitis result. All the nursing staff are very highly trained to do this and are expected to do a through pre-test consultation prior to testing for Hepatitis, So this prepares you for a positive or negative result. This is then followed up with a post test consultation and then depending on your results you are referred to a Specialist for Hepatitis C treatment. Our service also has a Blood Bourne Virus Clinic every Wednesday morning at the CDT which offers – full assessment, screening and vaccination, advice and support Around Hepatitis C, B, and HIV – plus treatment options, ongoing community support, links within the hospital, help and support accessing treatment Your comments are greatly appreciated and this will be discussed and addressed within the team. What I would like to do is rectify the problems you have had, and for you to come and book back in to the CDT to support you, and refer you for treatment. Once again I apologise. If you would like to discuss your concerns further, Please contact me via email Julie McFarlane Lifestyle Team Leader
