"Disgusted and desperate"

About: Southampton General Hospital / Accident and emergency

I am absolutely disgusted at the failure in care of my child. I brought her over from the Isle of Wight to the A&E department feeling sure I would be helped to sort her knee out, instead with no clinical assessment conducted and a complete refusal to do any scans, they have sent her away. She is a bright, very active child who has been soldiering on with a progressive problem and no one has taken any notice of the symptoms...the physios on the island think there is something wrong but no one is listening. The patient charter says we are supposed to have a say in the care of our children yet in this case, they have decided to base their decision using 5 month old MRI scans which did show abnormalities but which were taken before the knee locked completely and dismiss these and refuse to do new ones. My child cannot walk, she has zero mobility and yet they have just chucked her out. We will now seek a second opinion. I just hope these doctors can live with their decisions if found to be wrong

I am sorry to read that our ED department were not able to help with the clinical assessment and scans you sought for your daughter. I appreciate that as a mother you are concerned for your daughter and want answers to the difficulty she is having with her mobility.

If you would like us to further investigate her attendance please provide us with some personal details so that we can make enquiries into her care.

Alternatively it may be appropriate for your daughter to be reviewed by her GP who would be able to refer your daughter to a paediatric orthopaedic consultant if appropriate.
