"Post Medical abortion treatment"

About: Marie Stopes International Manchester Centre

I previously had a medical abortion at a smaller clinic. This seemed to go as planned but after 2.5 weeks I still had morning sickness, swollen stomach and strongly positive pregnancy test. I contacted the aftercare line who were incredibly helpful and referred me to Manchester for an appointment within the next few days for a scan.

I was nervous as to what would happen but upon arrival at Manchester clinic was reassured by the friendly and kind reception staff, they really put you a ease with no judgement of any kind. I was directed to a waiting area whilst my partner went to a separate area downstairs. I was called through for my scan pretty quickly and saw a lovely nurse who scanned me and explained that there was no pregnancy there but there were clots that had been retained. The nurse asked if I wanted to see and the nurse pointed out these clots. They explained my options and said it was my decision to either take another pill or have a procedure to remove the clots. The nurse helped me in my decision by explaining that the procedure would immediately remove everything and I could have the copper coil fitted at the same time. The nurse was so kind and easy to talk to.

I decided on a surgical procedure. I saw another lovely nurse and was taken down to theatre. I waited for a little while in a nice waiting area and then was taken through to a small room to slip off my trousers and underwear and wrap a sheet around my bottom half. I quickly went through to theatre and was intoduced to everyone and it was thoroughly explained what would happen. I decided not to have sedation it anaesthetic, you are given the decision but I decided against it. My feet were in stirrups and a speculum was placed inside me. When the procedure began it was uncomfortable but the amazing nurses held my hands and talked to me throughout. I felt really cared about. I had a iud put in and the whole process was a few minutes. I was taken to a recovery room with recliners, given a heat pad, offered pain killers and a drink and biscuits. There are other staff in there but it feels okay as you are all there for the same reason. It was difficult seeing ladies who had just come round from a general anaesthetic as they were so out of it, but they quickly came round. The staff taking care of us were very attentive. I was given antibiotics and the nurse sat next to me and explained aftercare and everything I needed to know. After 20 minutes I was allowed to leave( I was well and had no sedation). A nurse took me upstairs and saw me out with some kind words about taking good care of myself.

Every single member of staff was fantastic and areal asset to the Marie Stopes name. I felt I resisted and in control as every step was clearly explained. I was treated with dignity and respect. Their attitudes made a difficult situation so much easier and I will always be grateful for the kindness and understanding if all at the clinic.
