"Cancelled operation/lengthy waiting time."

About: University Hospital Hairmyres University Hospital Hairmyres / Pre Operative Assessment

(as the patient),

I have been struggling with a perastomal hernia for quite some time. I first presented to my GP November 2016 who referred me to Hairmyres for a surgical review. I received a letter for a surgical review for February 2017, before I could attend my appointment I suffered from severe vomiting and discomfort around the hernia site. I attended A&E to which I was kept in overnight due to the hernia obstructing my bowel. I was then seen by my surgeon in the morning. The surgical team very  helpful and explained my situation in great detail and also explained that because of the nature of my hernia and past medical history, it would not be a straightforward operation. They informed me that they would be in touch for further review. I waited approx 10 weeks with no word and during that time experienced great discomfort resulting in being signed off work. I phoned my surgeons secretary to which I was I informed that they had no documentation as to me being in hospital. Concerned I might have been lost in the system, I went back to my GP to who re-referred me back to Hairmyres.

To cut a long story short, I have received various appointments and reviews and was delighted to receive a letter end of October with a date for my operation. The operation was to be next month. However, I received a second letter this week explaining my operation had been cancelled due to unforseen circumstances. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement. I suffer extreme discomfort and vomiting on a regular basis and I feel that a year is far too long to experience this, I understand that the hospital has emergencies and are under pressure to fulfil all patients needs, however I have suffered for a very long time.

Dear Severely Disappointed,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback about your experience as a patient at Hairmyres. It is obvious that the delays and lack of communication you have experienced have done nothing to help relieve the discomfort that you have been suffering and I am really sorry for this.

If you would like to make contact with our Patient Affairs Department on 01355 585325 and provide some further details then I would be happy to look into the specifics of your situation for you.

Kind Regards,

Cameron
