"Good Care on the Ward./ Strange Experiences"

About: Broomfield Hospital

I became ill with food poisoning in early March last year but the gp sent me to hospital with a suspected appendix also. I knew I had food poisoning but I was still sent for testing prior to surgical ward assessment. I remained patient and was still my usual talkative and humorous self while testing and drips etc. I became very ill later that evening and was less cheerful being sick and and going to the toilet every 10-15mins almost. I became weak dehydrated and my temp was through the roof and heartbeat very quick.

They sat me in the corridor of the surgical ward until a private room could be made available as they were unsure if I was infectious or not. They took good care of me taking my obs and things although no food was allowed. There was a slightly rude registrar I assume assisting the actual surgeon examining me. After they were done I was sent back out to sit down for another 2 hours. That was fine and I think they decided then it was not my appendix.

The room I sat opposite was a staff room of sorts. Including myself there were many young patients. 4 surgeons entered the staff room or office and I do not think that they knew I could hear every single word. Without going into any detail it was largely about the people that were on the ward including myself. I did not know where to look when they opened the door but was determined to act dumb. I still think they think that door is sound proof, it really isn't. I will never forget that as long as I live. I take no offense now and did mention it one of the ward sisters.

I am still shocked what I heard though even to this day. It was a definite eye opener. I am unlikely to have to ever see them again as I am under neuro and ent at another hospital. The nursing staff were really friendly and helpful though and dedicated. When I saw the head surgeon the next day I just though please let me go. They wanted me to stay and kept me on the ward even though I could have been transferred the g medical. They asked me if I was still vomiting etc and I said no but I was really. I just wanted to do all in my power to go home eat rest and get well. Plus I have spondylosis and the bed was like a torture chamber on my neck and occiput. :( Overall very informative visit and not one I will forget in a hurry.
