"I think it's unfair that the NHS won't pay for elderly patient's essential care"

Unfortunately mine is not an isolated story, I believe it's happening all around the country.

My mother has dementia, she cant walk, feed, bathe, is doubley incontinent, has chronic urine and chest infections, multiple skin tears, pressure sores, has frequent mini strokes, and the NHS has refused to provide care for her. She has to pay £650 every single week. I really think it's elderly abuse taken to a whole new level, and it will affect almost every family at some time. In my opinion it's criminal and it doesn't feel like anyone in power will do anything about it.

When elderly people (& unfortunately, some not so elderly) have a medical problem - for example CVA, dementia, chronic (long term) diabetes, chest & heart conditions - and they need 24 hr care, it feels to me that the NHS will do everything in their power to avoid paying for their care. In our case, it feels like they've hidden behind the blanket of "social care" ie they said that even though my mother has medical problems, because she cant feed, bath, walk or perform other daily necessities, then this is social, not medical care and as such Social services have to provide the care. Social care is means tested and like in my mother's case, where the person has a house, or savings, they have to sell their home and pay the sometimes collossal fees to the nursing home. Incidentally, these "nursing" homes have now been reclassified as "Care homes".
