"Breast screening Elgin"

About: NHS Grampian / North East Scotland Breast Screening Centre

(as the patient),

I had appointment to get screen done went along to unit. Didn't realise I was quite as nervous as I was until nurse started asking me questions. One of them have you had a scan with us before - okay I take a minute to answer but then got told in an exasperated tone that I should know if I had had one or not.

I was taken aback to say least and did reply under my breath how rude!   which it was! Nurse called my name to get scan done and who was it Nurse who I just met - Well I could do nothing right at all was even spoken to about how to stick my bottom out, being told I should be able to do better when they were pressing my chest in with somewhat sore. Again I was taken aback at this Nurses manner to be in a job in thier position doing this job it was utterly disgraceful and very very rude.

No way should this Nurse be in this job they were speaking to me like a 5 year old. Imagine  if this had been a poor lady of much older age getting their attitude! Totally unacceptable! I am a nurse myself and would be ashamed to treat any member of the public the way in which they spoke and dealt with me there are no excuses. I have been told by other women of how they didn't speak to one nurse and another felt she was rushed and staff were rude so really this needs to be addressed! Rudeness in the nursing profession should not happen we are supposed to be a caring supportive profession no matter what job you are in! I came out feeling soo angry with them I could not think for a few minutes. I have had a screen done before where staff were friendly supportive encouraging even smiling!

Dear Teto

I am sorry to hear of your poor experience while attending mammography in Elgin and the behaviour of the radiographer during your visit which is not as we would expect of our staff. I have shared your response and how you felt during and after your visit at breast screening with the radiographer superintendent. She is going to discuss this with her team who visited Elgin and remind them of the importance of communication with patients while taking time to explain the procedure in a manner that is not hurried when the patient is already anxious about attending for this procedure.

Thank you for raising your concerns.

Kind regards

Margaret Meredith, Nurse Manager.

Update posted by Teto (the patient)

Thank you I did receive a telephone call relating to this expressing how sorry they were that this had happened to me and had reassured me that person concerned was spoken to about it. Nurse involved said she did not realise her manner came across the way it day it did. This I'm afraid I have to disagree with but left the conversation on telephone when it was stated it would go on datix which it should. There is no excuse for this behaviour from a professional nurse at all. I hope for future and for anyone elderly or disabled in an way this does not happen again I am normal fit person and it shook me quite a bit to be treated in such a horrible manner rushed or not.

Teto
