"Emergency life saving care after sub-arachnois..."

About: Southampton General Hospital / Neurosurgery

I want to thank the Paramedics/ambulance crew who responded to my neighbours call and stabilised my condition till I was at SGH A&E. I was unconscious and unaware but my sons and family have told me what they witnessed and how the staff were honest, direct about the severity o my condition while giving reassurance through their professionalism. The neurological team clipped the aneurysm, ward staff (NITC and ward E) were so kind and supportive. I am a nurse by training so watched with interest. Every member of the team was diligent, hard working and respectful. I read another review in which a comment of being "dopey" was cited as rude; from personal experience most of us patients during my stay were less than 100% alert for some part of our stay. Being described as dopey is for me a more humane way of describing neurological impairment than "cognitive deficit". I never once felt staff belittled my attempts to recover. I noted their working over their working hours to ensure excellent care. The medical staff I found approachable.

I feel staff in NHS have given me the greatest gift.I have more time with my loved ones. Their skill and dedication means I have few problems that will not improve with time. I am amazed that other people do not recognise the enormity of what is done each and every day in NHS. When sick people can be difficult I know I was, staff are human too and there is an emotional cost to working with such high levels of stress and intellectual pressure. No sooner did a patient leave than another was admitted, constant pressure on the wards staff.

I saw kindness, humanity, skill and dedication. Those qualities were present in A&E and for the first attenders who I will never be able to thank enough for saving my life. Thank you all in neuro unit you are marvelous people.

Thank you so much for your honest and thoughtful feedback.

It is pleasing that you received a great service and that you continue to make your recovery. there is no greater reward to the hard work and dedication of staff than to read your account of the gift of life.

Your comments have been shared with the matron for neurosciences and the emergency department to share with the wider team.
