My dentist referred me for wisdom tooth removal on 4.9.17 & said it would take up to 6 months as the waiting list was long. I later moved to another dentist & had my initial checkup on 15.11.17 & needed a very difficult large filling in the tooth next to the wisdom tooth which might entail chipping away the wisdom tooth partly. They asked me to check the referral had gone through. I rang Bristol Dental Hospital who said the referral had been made but I had been discharged as I had not responded to a letter I had never in fact received and they refused to reinstate me saying that my previous dentist had to re-refer me. I explained about the difficult filling & that I had put in a complaint to the NHS regarding my previous dentist & had moved dentists so did not think this was likely. They still refused to reinstate me & send a new letter. To date I have not received a response from my previous dentist. I will contact the dental hospital next week & find out if the manager will actually reinstate me based on this but am not holding out much hope given what I was told. I feel very strongly that there is a possibility that the letter they claim to have sent was printed but not actually sent as we have not had any difficulties with our post & I have lived at the same address for many years. If the dept refuse to reinstate me I will make a Freedom of Information act request as to how many letters for wisdom tooth removal were sent in the past 6 months & how many potential patients were discharged for not responding to the initial letter. That will clarify if this is likely to be an unfortunate isolated incident or some kind of ploy to keep a long waiting list down to a minimum. I will then contact my MP if the figures appear to support the latter idea
