"Dressing request."

About: Lymington New Forest Hospital

Attended with my son 15/11/17/

Receptionist who checked us in lovely.

The triage nurse brilliant - lot of care and concern.

When we were seen about hour and a half after arriving - this was fine, the nurse was okay

regarding my sons condition - he had toe surgery recently in London where he lives alone and they advised he had an infection.

The toe was dressed and advice given.

We explained returning at 14.30 on the train to London from Christchurch - this was about 13.20pm. Advised to change dressing in the morning - given iodine dressing - they had used half of the iodine dressing.

I requested a plaster please

the sealed ones that they used - I was informed - use any plaster. I was speechless.

Not an unreasonable request as travelling and no time to stop to buy a proper dressing plaster.

I work for the NHS and on relaying my story at work - could not believe it.

Perhaps a bit more empathy needed.

Maybe I should have offered to pay?

Thank you for taking the time to post your valuable feedback about the Minor Injuries Unit at Lymington New Forest Hospital.

We are sorry for the lack of empathy you experienced when you requested a plaster, for your son, after his dressing change, especially as you were travelling.

The Head of Nursing has spoken to the team and it is normal practice that we would supply the specialist dressing required for a dressing change (the iodine based dressing) but would, in the interests of NHS costs, expect the service user to provide their own basic additions such as a plaster.

If you would like to discuss this further please contact the Complaints and Patient Experience Team on 023 8087 4065 or by e-mail hp-tr.customerexperience@nhs.net

Kind regards
