"Cancelled Operations for Princess Anne"

About: University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

Yesterday I was called by the admissions unit advising my operation "could" be cancelled next week, I am due to be operated on Wednesday and have be waiting since May for this date. I was told that there is a problem with the filtration system that has been ongoing and operating list have been cancelled on a daily basis by judgment of "wait and see" if the problem is fixed. Something like this should be able to be fixed as an absolute priority and in this day and age should it be taking days to resolve?

Personally I find this whole situation a total nightmare, waiting this long for major surgery that requires a joint consultant team and months of planning childcare, psyching myself ready for what is to come and arranging time of work etc. as I will be completely of my feet not to mention this time of year is extremely stressful for most of us I am now even more stressed by the not knowing. I understand that some operating space has been offered by the General but this is for Cancer patient surgery; of course this is completely understandable however, as a patient requiring joint surgery these operations should be considered as exceptional too? Why are there no back up plans for situations like this? I know patients that have been operated at the Spire on NHS, why is this not the case for PAH operating lists? If my operation does not go ahead, what does this mean for my new date, I know the consultants only run every six weeks together but assuming these lists are planned 8/10 weeks ahead, either I will be waiting weeks possibly months again or some poor other lady will be cancelled to accommodate me.

Either way, not a great situation to be in and a very uncertain and stressful situation for me and my family.

I am sorry to read of your concerns regarding the potential cancellation of surgery. The Trust appreciates that planning for surgery has a great impact on all aspects of your life including metal preparation, socially and practically.

If you would kindly contact patientsupportservices@uhs.nhs.uk or tel: 023 81206350 we can look into the circumstances of the potential cancellation and advise appropriately on what is happening to address your particular case.
