I have a family history of hormone problems and allergies...for many years I never thought they may be connected then started researching, etc. Thyroid disease and severe Premenstrual syndrome runs in my family, and I have both. It took me 17 years to get a proper diagnosis and treatment whilst living in another part of Yorkshire (which I had to fight for) because little was understood about it or others were dismissive.
When I moved to Hull, my new GP referred me to see Dr Guthrie, and I now have successful treatment (smile).
Hippocrates, the Greek Physician, first described PMS over 2,ooo years ago and it was given relatively little attention until the 20th century. PET scans have shown abnormal serotonin, dopamine, leptin levels, etc. Genetic findings have been explored (see chapel Hill study on net).
However, it may be that menstrual health treatment is only secondary...serotonin, dopamine, leptin levels, etc may still be imbalanced and so PET scans are crucial before and after menstrual health (PMS treatment)to determine what's a primary and what's a secondary state.
Other areas in the UK have PMS clinics (including Leeds), and I would like to see one in HULL to help many women (and their families) to overcome this dreadful condition which appears to be hormome (endocrinology) and brain (neurological) related...see hypothalamus and pituitary on my website www.aldrishormonesupport.org.uk
In my opinion PMS needs an intergrated service.
