"Late for appointments because of parking"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as the patient),

There aren't enough spaces in the car park and people are parked all over the place on grided off areas on pavements on grass. I think it's shocking. The hospital keep saying they are doing something about the parking but clearly it seems they are not doing enough.

I think the identified comuters using train station should be fined or clamped to ensure that this stops, and the car park entrances should be monitered either by barrier or a portacabin type thing. I have had a number of appointments i have been late for and it doesnt matter how  early I come in for an appointment because the car park is always the same.

Dear 6709,

I’m so sorry for the frustration and anxiety you experienced when trying to park at the hospital for your appointment.

This is really disappointing and frustrating for us as this impacts on the efficiency of our clinics which can resulting in waiting times on the day and can also impact on waiting times in general terms if resulting in missed appointments.

I’m sorry I’m not able to offer any guarantees that the parking situation will be improved in the short term. As you point out, we are currently unable to fine or clamp vehicles but we are in discussion with Local Authority partners to consider short and longer term solutions to this issue. We are looking at developing parking management arrangements which will ensure that our spaces can only be used by patients, visitors and staff. Unfortunately this is a fairly complex matter and will involve a level of engagement with the public and our staff. The timeline is for this to be in place by April 2019.

We have been identifying and targeting people who use the hospital car park for accessing the Hairmyres train station over the past few weeks and hope that this focussed effort will benefits our patients. In the meantime, I’ll ask my Communications team to see if we can get something in the local press about the impact that commuters are having on people such as yourself by using the hospital as a train station car park.

Kind regards
