"Absolutely amazing staff, true life savers!"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital / Maternity

I first attended the antenatal ward for induction on 3rd November and was met and cared for by a lovely midwife. My induction wasnt started as they were waiting for beds on labour but thats understandable when others are in more need and was explained to me. When i asked about a cesarean due to fearing my labour going wrong, they were quick to arrange for consultants to speak to me and they were brillant at explaining all my options and putting my mind at rest.

14 hours after arriving on antenatal, i was moved onto labour ward and had my membranes ruptured. My labour progressed quite rapidly after this and the epidural i requested was administered quickly (even though it then failed). It was then found that my baby was in an unfavourable position and at 10cm dialated i was told to wait an hour before beginning to push as they wanted to see if baby would turn into a better position. For an hour i was in excruciating pain and had to resist the urge to push with only gas and air. This is where another brillant midwife and especially the student with them really helped me cope and couldnt have been nicer.

After the hour passed i was allowed to push (although now with the gas taken away so no pain relief), but it then became clear that baby was stuck. An emergency button was pulled and the room quickly filled with staff as babys heart rate had dropped. The consultant i had spoken to the day before came back and explained to me that the best option would be to try forceps delivery as baby was becoming distressed with every contraction. A theatre was opened up for me and i was given a spinal block. While preparing for forceps, babys heart rate crashed and an emergency cesarean was performed immediatly (which was my biggest fear).

I really would like to thank the 2 midwives, student and especially the consultant/surgeon? that delivered my son as they saved my babys life!

At all times i felt informed of what was happening and believe they acted in mine and babys best intrest without hesitation.

The next day the consultant came to visit me on postnantal and explained why they did what they did and asked if i had any questions. It was nice of them to follow up especially when theyre so busy and it made me feel very reassured.

Its clear to see the constraints the staff are working within (time, limited beds, overstretched staff) but ultimately i was never let down and the care i recieved was exceptional.

I would appreciate if you could pass my many thanks onto the staff imparticular those mentioned.
