"Difficulties with sedation for my endoscopy in Hull"

I attended an appointment for an endoscopy at Hull Royal Infirmary.

The doctor was not happy that I had asked for sedation and kept asking me why I wanted it. This was a personal preference for my own comfort and I felt like he wasn't confident enough to offer me sedation.

A male nurse then went on to insert a needle into the back of my hand (the type of needle used to attach a drip to etc), and as he seemed like he didn't know what he was doing he said my vein had collasped. However, a lot of blood was pouring out of my hand and another nurse said the vein had not collasped. My hand now has a bad bruise on it and is swollen.

The doctor (who was asking about my sedation) then put some sterilising gel on my other arm to insert the needle but after doing so, asked a medical student to then feel my vein - after he'd put the gel on, without her washing her hands. This had no regard for infection control whatsoever.

My overall procedure was fine but I was not impressed with the above.
