"Psychiatric care in the lakeside unit"

About: Leigh Infirmary Mh Oupatients Clinic

(as the patient),

I was recently a patient in the Lakeside Unit at Leigh Infirmary. In my opinion the care I received was very poor. In particular, there were very few facilities available to the patients on the ward, it felt like some of the nursing staff only engaged with the patients in order to dispense medication, and appointments with the doctors were brief and infrequent.

In my opinion the staff seemed to rely on medication and ECT rather than providing any talking therapy. Furthermore, the psychological services department appears to be very understaffed and there are long waiting lists for talking therapy.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give 5 Boroughs a score of 2.

Thank you for your comments an I am sorry to hear that your stay on Lakeside ward was not to a satisfactory standard. The ward manager has recently reviewed the programme of activities on the ward further to service user feedback and I hope that this is beginning to have a positive effect on the experience of those requiring in-patient admissions. We are also looking at implementing the Star Wards initiatives within all acute areas on the Leigh site. Star Wards provides simple solutions for increased interaction between staff and inpatients and also provides practical examples regarding a range of activities to promote physical and mental wellbeing. In respect of the medical input to the ward, I am pleased to advise that we have recently appointed a full time Consultant Psychiatrist who will be dedicated to inpatients on Lakeside. He is due to take up post soon and we are sure this will have a positive impact on the ward. If you wish to talk to me about specific issues during your stay please do not hesitate to get in touch directly and I will arrange to meet with you. Thank you once again for your feedback as it is only with this we can address any issues and increase the quality of the inpatient experience

I'm really sorry to hear you had a bad experience. It is hard suffering from these conditions and when you have a bad experience it can make things a whole lot worse.

Patient Opinion is a great place as it gives the hospitals opportunity to improve their services, its great you posted as its the only way things will change.

We have a forum for people who suffer from these conditions as we are fellow sufferers and found it hard to get people to understand. Now we can chat to fellow sufferers and its good to talk.

Being able to communicate is vital in getting well and the journey to recovery.

Take care
