"I am concerned about my grandfather's care"

About: Conquest Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

My 94 year old grandfather has been at the Conquest Hospital in Hastings for over two weeks now. I am very concerned about the level of care and hygiene within the ward which he is on.

For example, he was given a suppository for faecal impaction, and a shortime later he had a bowel movement whislt he was in his bed. He summoned a nurse who sorted him out, however left his cardigan which was covered in faeces on top of his bed without bagging it. My aunt had to ask one of the nursing staff for a bag so she could take the soiled cardigan home and wash it.

When visiting at the weekend I noticed there did not seem to be enough staff on the ward to feed and take care of the needs of the other elderly gentlemen on the same ward. Luckily I was there to feed my grandfather otherwise he would not have eaten.

This week when my aunt went to visit she was shocked to find my grandfather sitting in his urine soaked pajamas in a urine soaked chair. He had evidently been like that for two hours. My aunt asked for the nurses assistance and was told that someone would be along within a few minutes. An hour later, still no nurse or help; she decided to change him herself. My poor grandfather, the indignity of having to be changed like a baby by his daughter, and my poor aunt having to leave her father after visiting hours wondering if he will be sitting in bed getting wet and cold during the night.

My aunts afraid of making too much fuss in case he is treated any worse. I feel that there is very little more they could do to make his time in hospital any worse.
