About: Emergency ambulance service (Wiltshire)

(as the patient),

I’m type 1 diabetic, and had a ear infection coming back from holiday. I had already seen dr 3 days for stronger pain killers, but at 3AM I was in so much pain that I called 999 also my bg was 28mmol by then. The operator paramedic was very very helpful, he kept talking to me until the paramedic got to me.

I could not rate the paramedic that came. They took a look at my antibiotics and said I hadn’t taken enough and it was more then 4 hrs since I had taken some pain killers so have some more. Even though I was only allowed 2 tablets 3 x a day. They did my blood sugar and said to take some more insulin and for me to see my GP in morning.

When I got to see my GP, he admitted me and I was in hospital later that day.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know of your experience with our service. I am pleased to hear that you were reassured by our call handler whilst waiting for the paramedic to arrive. I am sorry that on this occasion our treatment was less than you would have expected, and based on the information you have provided it would seem reasonable that you should have been taken to the nearest hospital for further assessment.
