About: Ealing IAPT

(as the patient),

I applied to the IAPT at Ealing several years ago. I wanted EMDR.

I had an interview and was told that my background was too complex and referred to Secondary Care. I was transferred to Secondary Care at Ealing Hospital and put on a MBT therapy course for Borderline Personality patients.

My diagnosis was claustrophobia/ situational anxiety. I had to leave the MBT therapy course as I felt I was being verbally abused by another patient and went back to my GP. Three years later, my GP is having to refer me to the IAPT again.

If the IAPT had treated me in the first place - none of this pain and suffering in prolonging my treatment would have happened. As yet I have not heard back from the IAPT - but I suspect it will be another rejection again - so I will have to go round in full circle again for the third time.

Dear "Paub"

Thank you for posting on Care Opinion. I'm really sorry to hear that you have not found treatment to help you with the difficulties that you describe.

As a primary care service, our staff are trained in a number of therapies to treat mild to moderate mental health difficulties and IAPT services are careful not to treat outside of their training and competency.

If following an assessment we are of the opinion that we are not going to be able to meet the needs of someone who is referred to us (or self-refers), either because of complexity or because a brief intervention would be detrimental, then as is best practice, the referral will be declined and the referrer informed. We will also suggest alternative services which we believe will be able to provide an appropriate intervention.

I'm sure that this process has been very frustrating for you but I would suggest that you discuss your experience thus far with your GP and explore what other services may be available and helpful for you.

People may of course disagree with our assessment and as you know, this can be raised with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) or the WLMHT complaints department who will make every effort to resolve the disagreement.

Best wishes

Update posted by paub (the patient)

Dear Dr Louise De Haro,

Thank-you for your reply to my story.

When I was refused treatment at Avenue House (Secondary Care) I went back to GP last week and asked her to refer me back to Primary Care for the fourth time - IAPT - the same service I asked my GP to refer me to in 2014 and 2015 and 2016.

She has done this now and so I now await a reply from IAPT to see if they can treat me.

Yours sincerely

Patricia Aubrey
