"Frustrating trip to childrens A&E"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Accident & Emergency (Emergency Care)

(as a parent/guardian),

My two year old son attended A&E with a cut to his eyelid. During the Triage process the nurse explained that the wound may need to be super glued and therefore would need to be assessed by a Doctor.

1 hour 30 minutes later we were still waiting to see a Doctor. The swelling around the cut had reduced significantly and therefore I approached another nurse to enquire if the cut could be reassessed by a Triage nurse and was told that that was not possible and my son had sustained a "bump to the head" and that was "why" he was waiting to see a Doctor.

This was not what I had been told by the Triage nurse. The wound was my primary concern and whether it needed to be closed or not! When asked what my options were the nurse was happy to inform me that I could leave without seeing a Doctor.

Having arrived at 20:15 we left the dept at 22:00 without seeing a Doctor! Had I been told that the wound did not require any medical attention then my son would have been tucked up in his bed at 20:30 and we must certainly would not have taken up a valuable hospital cubicle!

Hi HelpMe12345

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this feedback. Its important that we hear when things didn't go right as well as when things went well. It sounds like in this instance as if we definitely could have done things better.
Firstly let me express my apologies for this example of poor communication between nursing staff and yourself. We would definitely expect that parents are kept well informed whilst children are awaiting treatment, especially if there is likely to be any delay.

As part of the feedback process I will let the Senior Charge Nurse know of this post and ask her to action with the team the need to ensure that treatment options are very clearly articulated to parents & carers from triage onwards.

Thanks again for your post and I hope your son is well and truly on the mend.
