"Trying to book an appointment for my 10 year old"

About: Devon Access and Referral Team (DART) Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Paediatrics

(as a relative),

My 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis by our GP. She referred her to the consultant paedeatrician to have x-rays, scans and tests done to determine how advanced the scolisis is and if they are going to be able to prevent it getting any worse. We were advised by the GP because she is a child she will be a priority, I received a letter giving me a number to call to book an appointment. I called the number and was told there are no appointments in the book at all until at least the end of January. I asked if I could book an appointment for the end of January but was told 'no because it is too far in advance' - When I asked the lady what I was meant to do (first expressing how disappointed I was that they would even keep us waiting that long) she advised me to call back at the beginning of January.

If a child is a priority and it takes this long then I would hate to see how long a non priority case would take.

As a worried parent I am absolutely disgusted that it is going to take this long! WHat am I supposed to tell my daughter who is panicking at the state of her back which is already noticeable?

Dear ‘AmyG’

Thank you for contacting us, we’re grateful to everyone who takes the time to feedback on our service so that we can try to improve it.

I’m a bit confused as to what has happened regarding the booking of your daughter’s appointment and would be very grateful if you could give me a call so that I can check into the specifics and take action if necessary.

If you wouldn’t mind, please can you give me a call on 01626 883888 so that I can take some details from you and investigate? I will then be able to give you a fuller explanation of what has happened.

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Susan
