"Prescriptions shoved across the desk without a word"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran

(as the patient),

I have been to my medical practice on many occasions to pick up a prescription and most of the time members of the reception staff behave in a rude and insensitive way toward me.

I had one look at my medical records and tell me so loudly that everyone in reception could hear that I would not be getting a prescription. They had made that decision not a doctor, they then exclaimed in shock that I was on two types of the same medication long acting and short acting and proceeded to tell me I shouldn’t be taking the dose I was taking. Again their decision, not a doctor.

On many other occasions I have had my prescriptions shoved across the desk without a word and on the latest visit I was told immediately that it wasn’t ready as it had only been done this morning. When I told the reception staff I was in for a prescription I ordered last week not today it was fished out and shoved across the desk again without a word. I had to ask if it was all there because they don’t usually look through the whole box for your name and on many occasions I’ve had to go back after getting to the chemist to ask the, to look again for the other half.

It’s not all the receptionists, some are always very nice.

So today I’ve eventually had enough and made an official complaint, the reason I haven’t before is that I feel so unwell I don’t have the energy for it. I have a chronic illness with lots of additional problems caused by this illness including pain and severe fatigue.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Chally2,

I am sorry you have had such a hard time with your health, it does take it out of you when you are not feeling 100% and it can make everything so much harder to cope with. I also totally agree, we are all right to expect to be treated with respect and dignity. I take it you complained to the Practice Manager. It must seem strange to some people that this is the first port of call, but as GPs are independent contractors, this is the place to go in the first instance. I wish you well with this and I hope it improves so that all the receptionists treat you as they should.

I do hope your condition improves and you get a some relief from the fatigue.

Kind regards,

Eunice
