About: Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust

Visited the Maternity unit on Friday 20 October, to see my son, daughter in law and our beautiful first grandchild.I have been a qualified nurse for 43years,prior to my recent retirement, so i know what iam talking about, as a professional . On arrival on the ward i was overwhelmed by the offensive and stale smell that permeated everywhere. Also walking down the ward it was obvious the floor, skirting boards, glass windows, had not seen a proper clean in months, the whole ward was very unclean, I was very shocked with what I saw. Considering some of these are women recovering from surgical procedures, and new babies that are very vulnerable to infection, I was concerned. I appreciate the ward can be very busy at times but first impressions count, as the safety of new mothers and their babies. I was relieved when mum and baby were discharged. I also think there should be times when a patient can rest without a mobile phone being used day and night preventing people getting rest. Overall I was not very impressed with the Maternity Unit. Maybe someone needs to have a look at the overall cleanliness of the unit.

Thank you for your comments. We are really sorry you have had cause to raise these concerns.

Assurances have been sought from Ward 27 in relation to how often the ward is cleaned. Members of the cleaning staff are permanently based on the ward and they continuously clean the unit throughout the day. This involves cleaning the skirting boards and windows.

I am sorry if you found the ward to be anything other than clean but please be assured that your comments have been shared with the Matron of the unit.

Thank you.
