"Very indecisive doctors and midwives and the hospital is never cleaned"

About: St Mary's Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

The majority of staff were very nice but some of them seemed very indecisive, inexperienced and not capable of providing the care I needed.  My baby was born by a Grade 1 emergency C-Section after a lot of indecision by many doctors; I followed all their advice but when you are being rushed in the end for an emergency section it is quite overwhelming.  My midwife was disappointed the doctors were so unsure - I know they cannot know everything through all of the time; at the end of the day they saved my life and my baby.

I ended up in hospital over 2 weeks after the birth due to complications.  Very few staff knew what was going on and would ask me many times in a day where things were up to; asking somebody that was totally out of it on that many antibiotics and not sleeping whatsoever.  Some midwives could not insert a catheter, take blood or scan a bladder properly.  They also weren't aware that some antibiotics shouldn't be taken along with certain other drugs.

Some members of staff absolutely were outstanding and 9/10 had a fantastic attitude but it was the inexperience that was surprising.

If you stay, like most women do, short-term in this hospital you probably wouldn't notice but I never saw it cleaned.  I was bleeding all over the floor at times in my room(s) and it was never moped, wiped...nothing.  The sinks never washed or shower area.  The only thing that happened was the bins being emptied and when you vacated the room they did spray down the whole bed and change it all properly.

I had an unknown infection and ended up with sepsis.  Luckily it was spotted and luckily I was saved so I have many people to thank but the worrying thing is what is the root of the problem here?  Is it because the hospital wasn't cleaned?  Is it because many are unsure what is going on?

I feel scared to have a baby ever again but I feel thankful to be alive.

Thank you for your feedback. We were sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would want it to be on the postnatal ward at Saint Mary’s Hospital. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

Your concerns have also been raised directly with the Ward manager of Ward 66 so that they can look into them so that others don't experience the same issues as you did. Mrs Dransfield has explained that she has a number of newly qualified midwives providing care on her ward but wishes to assure you that they are supervised by a senior team of very experienced midwives. It was reassuring to read that you found 9 out of 10 staff outstanding and that they had a fantastic attitude. The Trust has introduced a Behavioural framework within which all members of the midwifery and medical teams work and the women and their families in our care are central to this ethos. I can assure you that we have passed on your thoughts to Dr Clare Tower, Clinical Director for Obstetrics and Mrs Kathy Murphy Deputy Director of Nursing and Head of Midwifery who will ensure the staff involved are aware of both your kind thoughts and the worry their actions have unintentionally caused you.

In response to your comments regarding the cleanliness of the ward, Mrs Kathryn Mitchell, Deputy Head of Facilities Management has been made aware of your observations and is keen to undertake a review of the Domestic Cleaning schedule in place on the ward and take corrective action.

It is difficult to respond to all posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk quoting reference number PO17/0204.
