"Left in A&E waiting room while having a..."

About: Birmingham Women's Hospital / Maternity care

I found out out little angle didn't have a heart beat a couple weeks ago, and of course I would be expected to miscarriage. No one in the hospital/the woman's was helpful at all, let me explain...

I decided I wanted this to happen naturally. 3 weeks on It started so I went to the woman's I was sure I was losing way to much blood I won't go into detail, but it was bad really bad to the point where you could see what was happening through my jeans initially I went to the woman's department first where I was told I would have to walk over to A&E to be sent back over to the women's (bare in mind what is happening to me) no one helped I was just left, I have never been so embarrassed. When I arrived at A&E I had to walk to reception to the explain what is happening to me to then have to stand there for 10 minutes in pain and saturated in my blood, the person on reception didn't seem to care the slightest and told me to take a seat in the waiting area, a room full of people. The pain was unreal and the bleeding only got worse, I couldn't believe I was left to wait in a room full of people in a situation like this, I left like a was in labour and couldn't even sit down with fear the chair would be saturated, I was in distress. I started to feel faint and my friend had rushed to the person at reception to tell them who didn't have a care in the world they asked how long I could be waiting to be told 4hrs. I was treated so wrong i felt violated. Miscarriage should be treated as an emergency, because it is an emergency. Just because miscarriage is a common occurence, it doesn’t make it any less of an emergency, when I was finally seen and put on a bed the nurses had the wrong details about me, they had another persons name ect and only realised after they had taken my blood and everything else. I was then left to bleed out for another 3 hours until they moved to the woman's. I could go on and on. I'm so disgusted and I don't think I'll get over this experience I just know that I would never use this hospital again.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss and that you has such a terrible experience, this is certainly not how we would want our patients to feel or be treated. In most cases we do advise patients to go to A&E for initial assessment unless they have been referred to us by their GP or a health professional. However, we would be keen to look into your concerns in more detail. If you could contact us our lead for the Emergency Pregnancy Assessment Unit would be happy to speak with you to discuss the issues you have raised around your care. If you can contact our Patient Experience Team on 0121 627 2747, we can arrange this with you. Thank you for taking the time to feedback and we hope you are able to get in touch.
