"Cancelled Operation"

About: Edgbaston Hospital

I was scheduled to have an operation yesterday. I arrived promptly at 12pm and was told I would be taken into theatre around 3pm. I was then told there was a delay in the operations so my operation would be later than expected, which I understood. Hours later I was still waiting. I was then told I would be taken in around 7:30pm-8pm. I asked the nurse if their was a time surgeons stop operating and they replied saying they would not stop until the list for the day was completed. Eventually, around 8pm the surgeon came in to tell me they were cancelling my operation for the day and gave me a provisional date for two weeks later, due to it being 'too risky' as their was not enough staff to assist them in theatre. I waited over 8 hours without eating or drinking to be then sent home. I had worked the operation around work and university- whilst taking time off. So to be then told it was cancelled was very frustrating. I asked the surgeon if the procedure could be done by a different surgeon and they had said that was up to them. Ultimately, a business should know what staff they have working and when, it should not be that at 8pm it is made known they will be understaffed. Additionally, if operations were late and the list was not completed, they as doctors and nurses should continue to uphold the care of the patient. Prior to this experience, I had made an appointment with a different consultant who cancelled my appointment the day before due to being off sick, the next available appointment was two months later. I then made an appointment to see a different consultant which was fine, however I was given a date for 25th September for my operation. It was then by chance I came to know this date was incorrect. They had me confused with a different patient. So then they gave me a second date and now this was cancelled and I have know got a third date for my operation.

This treatment is not fair and something needs to be done.

Thank you for taking the time to share your disappointment regarding the cancellation of your procedure following your recent admission.

Clearly there have been some failings in communicating to you the full reasons for the postponement of your surgery, which was due to unforeseen surgical complications earlier in the theatre list which then had a knock on effect.

I would very much welcome the opportunity to discuss this with you so that I can assure you that the decision to postpone surgery is only ever made in the patient's best interests and not to suit the hospital or staff.

If you would like to contact me we can then discuss this in more detail.

Many thanks
