"Where's the compassion?"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Accident and emergency Lincoln County Hospital / General medicine

(as a service user),

I recently spent two days in Lincoln County Hospital for investigations and feel so sad and disappointed with the care.   The first A& E doctor I saw was wonderful and the auxiliaries were very caring, checking I was feeling ok, didn't really see any nurses so can't comment on those.   I was then transferred to an assessment unit.   Not once did any member of staff introduce themselves, I had no idea who my assigned nurse was, no one ever asked if I was ok.   I would be such a simple process to implement, for the nurses to go round their patients after handover to introduce themselves and check on the plan for the day.   Can I suggest someone looks into the #hellomynameis campaign?

There were numerous old women on the ward who were unable to mobilise to the toilet, crying for help and no one answering the buzzer.   When someone did finally attend they sounded impatient and completely lacking any compassion.   There was no reassurance or empathy, just tutting and sighs of frustration.   The woman next to me was attended by a male NA who never spoke a single word to her whilst he was changing her soiled pads.

I think this lack of empathy needs some serious attention, it can't be blamed on resources or time because manners and empathy require neither.   Perhaps staff could start by taking the time to introduce themselves and spend the first 5 minutes of their day checking on their patients?   As it stands at the moment there is no way I would allow any elderly relative of mine to be cared for at LCH.

Dear Anonymous 35yo,

I sincerely apologise for the lack of compassion you observed whilst an inpatient on MEAU. All staff should be introducing themselves and it is very disappointing that they have not. As a trust we signed up to the Hellomynameis campaign in 2015 and I have asked each member of my team to personally reflect on your story and the importance of introductions to patients, families and carers they are caring for,

We expect all buzzers to be answered promptly and I will address this with all of my team. This is not the standard of care I expect from any of my team and would like to follow this up in more depth.

I would be grateful if you could contact myself or Sharon Kidd so that we could discuss this in more detail. My email is wendy.rojas@ulh.nhs.uk or Sharon.kidd@ulh.nhs.uk

Kind Regards

Wendy Rojas, Sister MEAU
