ToAdmission procedure was quietly efficient and had a calming effect. Basic tests and checks were carried out quietly and cheerfully. Time of operation was given. Choice of anaesthesia was discussed. I was surprised I had to walk to theatre suite over carpets that carried a lot of outside foot traffic. (Contamination into sterile area)? Pre-operation procedures were carried out again cheerfully and efficiently. Explanations of what was happening and why.
I cannot comment about recovery as i was "somewhat spaced out."
Within half an hour pre ordered sandwiches and tea were served.
It was emphasised by nursing staff from both shifts that pain control was important. I was not to wait for the pain to be unbearable before asking for help. My own and hospital drugs were discussed and controlled by nursing staff throughout.
A catheter was necessary which is common after spinal injections. This was applied painlessly by a senior nurse during the first night.. The food was adequate but the menu although healthy and sustaining was boring and different from my previous visit 2 years ago.
Physiotherapists visits were helpful and although they were firm in their approach to exercise it was with respect for the patient. Discharge on day 4 was smooth. with drugs being explained in detail. I was in room 29 which was dull because of overgrown shrubbery outside.
The room also had a tired look and in need of refurbishment.
