I've had several episodes of atrial fibrillation and tachycardia over the past 2 years. The last time I went to A&E (several weeks ago) I was given a few tests (bloods & ECG), moved to a side room of another ward (basically an unheated cupboard with a bed in it) and left more or less unattended (apart from a kind ward nurse who grew increasingly exasperated with the A&E staff for "abandoning" me). After 18 hours my heart had settled down (I received no treatment whatsoever, it just settled by itself). I wrote a polite note thanking staff for their care, left it on my bed and went home (this involved walking to the main road and catching a bus). After several weeks I was called in for a scan. More weeks later I received a letter saying I would receive a follow-up appointment by August. After that, nothing. I told my GP, hoping to gee up the Cardiology department at Shrewsbury. The doctor pretty much told me not to expect a follow-up appointment to materialise. Was that because I walked out without being "properly discharged"? The doctor couldn't answer that one, of course. Maybe it's because I'm almost 70 (not much point saving OAPs' lives when they contribute so little to the system -- very easy to ignore the fact that we've worked and paid in all our adult lives. You can tell I'm fuming. What upsets me is that we're asked for a review, yet it seems only the good ones count. It's not the fault of staff at the coal-face, it's lack of government funds leading to insufficient staff who can't cope with the increasing workload. Just try talking about this to anyone at any level in the NHS -- they just sidestep the issue and pass it off as something nobody can do anything about. Meanwhile, I've had many more episodes and waited them out at home, because what is the earthly point of going top A&E these days? Or of expecting the consultant to find a follow-up slot?
Thankyou for listening.
