When I visited my mother in the Royal Worcestershire Hospital a while back, I noticed that the hand gel used in the hospital was Purell. I believe this is a well known brand. However, from my own research online it is not clear whether Purell kills the norovirus. I understand that many alcohol-based hand cleaners do not kill the norovirus, and it seems to me vital that in a hospital setting, a product is used which is guaranteed to kill this very contagious bug. Numerous ward closures are necessary each year due to outbreaks. I gather that there are some new products which have been formulated especially to kill the norovirus (and virtually every other bug at the same time), for example Germstar Noro. I would like to know more about NHS policy in choosing the type of hand gels used in hospitals, and whether sufficient research has been done on their effectiveness against a range of viruses.
