"Child's heel injury"

About: St Peter's Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

My seven year old daughter attended her appointment with her father and I recount her opinion of the experience as follows:

- Confusion that the diagnosis of Severs Disease by Physio the previous Friday was discounted

- Made to feel ashamed by arriving to the appointment in a wheelchair we have on loan rather than hobbling, in pain, with the stress of being late

- Advised to just "go for it until you can't", which is why we ended up in A&E in great pain and distress 10 days ago, because my livewire daughter can't walk without limping.

This appointment was clearly irrelevant to my daughter's care and treatment. She also said the Physio did not speak clearly, but by then she had probably heard enough.I think if I had been present it would have been a struggle to remain composed, as dealing with this daily, on a practical basis, is becoming a strain, never mind trying to be cheerful when your child is so sad.

Glib, insensitive advice that underestimated my daughter's intelligence. Whenever a child is ill for weeks on end, they become far more mature and reflective for their age than they would have been, which is something to think about.

We are sorry to hear about your daughter’s experience at her appointment and that she and her father found our staff to offer insensitive advice.

It is very difficult to comment further without knowing your daughter’s name and accessing full details of her case. However we would welcome the opportunity to investigate further and see if there is anything we can do to improve things. If you would like us to do so then please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01932 723553 who can put you in touch with a senior manager in our orthopaedics team.
