"Third degree tear"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I gave birth to my daughter, I had fantastic midwives, one experienced and one student. I tested positive for strep b so was on an antibiotic drip during labour. I suffered a third degree tear and was taken to theatre for over two hours after labour. It was very traumatic and I am now frightened about giving birth again.

Please could you tell me what my options would be next time? Am I likely to tear again next time? Would I have any option to have a water birth? This was my plan the first time but due to strep b I was unable to be on the midwife lead unit. Would I be advised to opt for a caesarean instead,

Thank you for taking the time to tell me about your experience during childbirth.

Thank you also for your positive comments and I am sorry that you found your experience traumatic and are now frightened to give birth again.

I am not able to provide you with answers to the specific questions you have raised however if you are able to contact your previous midwife they may be able to help. Alternatively if you contact:

patient.relations@bfwhospitals.nhs.uk

with details of your questions then they will be able to ask an appropriate person to contact you

Thank you once more

Andrew
