"Professional understanding staff"

About: Nairn Town and County Hospital / Weight Management

(as the patient),

I am a trained nurse midwife, a health visitor who is retired and in my 70s. I have always had problems with my weight, since a child, but managed to keep it under control. In 2003 I became ill and went down hill quite rapidly and it was found that my thyroid was non existent and my pituitary gland had taken over. It has resulted in my B. P being 210 developed an enlarged heart and anemi). I was seriously ill for a couple of years and finally got my B. P back to normal levels and thyroid under control. My heart condition improved too. The large amount of my medication resulted in me gaining a large amount of weight resulting in me being 24 stone.

I finally got referred to Mairi who saw me at Nairn and then by video link at Invergordon Hospital and the last session back at Nairn.

This lasted 9 months in monthly sessions. I found Mairi very understanding and full of empathy, but remained very professional at the same time.

I managed to loose around 1/2 stone, but developed new eating habits. Since then I have continued to put into practice what I was advised to do and have found that I have felt a lot fitter and my gut much less sluggish.

I rang her last month to just say that I was sill continuing with the regime and that I have lost 30 kgs in weight, which I had worked out as around 6 stone.

I obviously feel a lot better and more active and hope to lose another 3-4 stone.
