"Am I just unlucky?"

About: Leicester General Hospital

I had my gallbladder removed by open surgery in February. Histology found cancer so I had a liver resection five weeks later. I was told I'd have an appointment within two weeks to give me the results of that. I waited seven anxious weeks. My specialist nurse forgot to ring me.

I was admitted last October with jaundice and cholecystitis and told then I'd have surgery that week, but got discharged with no proper explanation. I'd already had several procedures postponed during my stay.

In December I found out, by accident, that I wasn't even on the waiting list for surgery. I don't understand how that happened.

I was due to go for my six month check up tomorrow. I've had this appointment for six months. I went for a CT scan ten days ago and they've rung this evening to say they don't have the results of the CT yet, so they have cancelled. I have to ring tomorrow to find up if the results have turned up. I thought it was done electronically? The earliest I can have another appointment is two weeks apparently, so I'm left in limbo again, not knowing if my cancer is back.

Whilst I am grateful for the surgery I've had, I feel that, if this is happening to me, it must be happening to other patients. This is a chaotic state of affairs which is causing me and probably other patients a great deal of anxiety and stress.

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback.

We're really sorry to hear about your experience with the Gastrointestinal Services at the General Hospital. It's really upsetting to hear how you've been kept waiting, causing you a lot of anxiety and stress. This is not acceptable and we would like to investigate this further for you. If you are happy to do so, please email your name, address, date of birth and hospital number to: communications@uhl-tr.nhs.uk and we will raise this with the General Manager immediately so they can look into this further.

It's very disappointing to hear about your experience with this department and we hope we can try and resolve this for you and stop this happening again.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Communications Team
