"Excluded from my own health care"

About: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

While staying at shrewsbury hospital after having an operation which was meant to be a day surgery, I was told that I had to stay in overnight but I wasn't told why. The nurse on the ward and Health Care Assistant were brilliant with my care, making sure that I was comfortable and happy at all times

It was in fact the doctors that came to see me that were the issue, they spoke down to me every time that they spoke to me, which was infrequent because the majority of the time they were talking about me to each other as if I was not in the room. They took a lot of blood samples which when I asked what they were testing for and when I would get the results they completely ignored me. I found out after I was discharged from my GP that I had sepsis while in hospital and no one told me which I find disgusting as sepsis can become serious and fatal, I did not feel included in my health care at all by the doctors.

The day before my discharge I was visited by the consultant who told me that there were complications with my procedure so they had to place a set on in the area which none of the nurses had heard of, when I asked just after my operation whether there were any issues I was told that there weren't any.

I have to have my wound packed and dressed every single day so after visiting my practice nurse at the GP to have it packed and dressed I found out that it had been packed incorrectly from the start as they had been placing the packing in between my buttocks instead of putting the tape inside the cavity (therefore leaving the wound open to infection which obviously is not great as I had already had sepsis while in hospital.

I feel that patients need to be involved in their own health care and actually told what they are being tested for, what their results are and any issues.

I am pleased to read you found the care provided by the Nurse and Health Care Assistants was brilliant. I am however disappointed to read your comments regarding your care by our medical team and their communication to you of your care. In order to use your valuable feedback to improve the care we provide and to pass the feedback on to the relevant teams I would appreciate it if you could provide more detail to our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01743 261691 or by email pals@sath.nhs.uk so we can follow up your concerns.
