My Aunt, 96, was admitted to A&E on Friday night. My husband and I went over to be with her. No problems there, she had blood tests etc.. and as there was nothing more we could do, we came home.
I am listed as her next of kin, and I also ensured my name and phone number were on the front of her papers.
On Saturday I phoned to find which ward she was in, was put through and told she was having a blood test. No problem.
Today, Sunday, I phoned and was told (I presume by the receptionist) that she was comfortable and no medical information could be discussed over the phone, only face to face.
I fully appreciate the confidentiality aspect but since this would entail a round trip of some 30 miles just to be able to ask for information - of which there might not be much at this stage, seemed totally ridiculous to me.
I gave the matter some thought and rang back, asking to speak to a senior member of staff. I asked, as they cannot tell just anyone who phones in someone's medical information - which I understand - could someone ring me to discuss my Aunt as they have my contact information.
This was agreed and the nurse caring for my aunt called back soon after and will be in touch later today when there is more information available.
Could I suggest that some sort of procedure be put in place so that next of kin can be kept informed by phone and not just told to come in if they want to discuss the patient's condition. For some people, the distance from the hospital could make it impossible.
Otherwise, Musgrove is an excellent hospital. My husband and I have both had major operations and good care over recent years.
