"Mixed experiences"

About: Northwick Park Hospital / Maternity

I went into the labour ward because my baby wasn't kicking as much so they had me under supervision for a few days and shifted me to the ward where many women are recovering from birth and/or being induced. The first few midwives were ok but the waiting time was way too long! After I got induced my pains began to get worse my husband was with me but everyone has to leave by 10pm so he was told to leave by a cover midwife who was extremely rude and I saw discrimination first hand that day. They drew the curtain for the lady in front of us who's partner was also with her then quietly (not quiet enough as we heard) said to the man it's past 10pm but you can stay just leave the curtain drawn and don't go out or someone will see you. At this my husband flipped out and demanded an explanation to which they said they'd get security to get him out - when he asked why the other man was allowed they had no explanation, it was ridiculous it really was.

The team who performed my emergency cesarean were amazing, the surgeon midwife anesthetist lovely people.

The after care ok, again it took ages for me to get any sort of help with breastfeeding, and even longer to get discharged! The thing that completely ruined my experience was the cover midwife - they kept saying if you're in pain take painkillers, you're not going down to the labour ward not for another 8 hours - thank God I asked for gas and air so the other midwife monitored my baby's heartbeat and saw it deteriorating and I was then rushed to labour ward but had I not asked for that I dread to think what would have happened.

I know the midwives are under pressure but just because I don't make a lot of noise and the lady in front of me was making a scene it didn't mean she was allowed privileges when the rules should be the same for everyone! They kept saying I will not check to see how dialated you are, when husband said can you please check they said no I just know okay. Very very rude! Please do something about them.

I was saddened to learn of your experience and apologise for the poor level of care and attention you have received.

However, I was pleased to read that the care you received from the team at the time of your caesarean was amazing and I hope you and your baby are recovering well, and settling into a routine.

Thank you for your helpful feedback, I have shared your comments with the Divisional Lead for Women's Services. Please can you let the Patient Relations team know your contact details as we are unable to access them from this web site, by email on LNWH-tr.patientrelations@nhs.net or by telephone on 020 8869 2026 in order for maternity services to contact you.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Pam
