I am 81 years old and accompanied an elderly friend to A&E. My friend can't walk well. We were advised to go to minor injuries - a very long walk. There was no seating at all to rest on the long walk and no-one to help to find a wheelchair - so we both struggled.
The minor injury unit was really really cold. I asked for some water for my friend - it never arrived. The water jugs were empty for the whole time. Eventually I took it from the tap in the toilet. My elderly friend was really cold - so I phoned a friend to ask her to bring warm clothes. Another male patient heard me on my phone - and he went off to find blankets for the people waiting who were all cold.
Why is there no drinking water available?
Why did no one care at all to find blankets for the patients? We were later told the air conditioning cannot be turned off - so why can't it? and if it can't then why can't staff explain it and provide blankets. I am afraid to say I was appalled. The medical care was good - and had we not needed to stay - we too would have left - as we saw other people leave. No one came near the waiting room for the 2 hours we were there. You ask if I would recommend this to friends and family - not if I had a choice - this department is not suitable for frail and elderly people
