"Excellent service."

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency

On Sunday morning I started to get stomach pain and a sicky feeling. This got worse and and after a bit of prodding discovered a painful lump below my ribs. I had been shifting some heavy furniture so guessed I could have given myself a hernia. Went first to Bideford MIU, seen and examined quickly and the off to Barnstaple A&E arriving 2 pm 'ish. About 30 minutes after registering I saw the triage nurse and later the doctor. They immediately sent me to to a cubical and arranged blood tests calling a surgeon to have a look. Fortunately, while being examined whatever had been sticking out decided to go back in and so I avoided emergency surgery. After the blood tests came back OK I was allowed to go home and now waiting for a MRI scan and an appointment to see a surgeon. The A&E was very busy, I was in pain, and dreading being poked about, being a man I have the standard low pain threshold, and also just very worried. I needn't have been. Seen within 2 hours, treated professionally by all staff, everything explained by the doctor and later the surgical registrar. I left 4 hours after arriving, sore but in far less pain than I had arrived with and with the reassurance of follow up treatment. Honestly, can't fault a thing. Thank you.

Dear Alan

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive feedback with us when you unfortunately had to visit the Bideford MIU and the Emergency Department at the North Devon District Hospital (NDDH). It is reassuring to know that you did not have to undergo emergency surgery and that you are now awaiting a MRI scan and an appointment to see a surgeon.

I can understand that you were worried about your symptoms, but I am pleased that you were seen quickly by the triage nurse, and the doctor and surgical registrar explained everything to you.

I have forwarded on your kind comments about your recent experience to the Managers of the Bideford MIU and the Emergency Department where they will be gratefully received and shared with the staff involved in your care.

Kind regards

Jayne
