"I will continue to exercise as long as I am able"

I was given early retirement in 2007 and was informed of the fact one week prior to the leaving date. Two months later I began to experience the most horrendous back pain which could only be treated with pain relief, which wasn't very successful.

I was referred for pain killing injections which were more successful, but this was not until late 2009. In 2010 I realised that I had been depressed since my retirement. I had no quality of life and had gained weight since giving up smoking 6 years previously.

My doctor referred me to active lifestyles and I met with Lisa who offered me various possibilities to improve my health. I was not able to work in a gym because of my back problems, but Lisa suggested aqua aerobics. This was the beginning of a new life.

Over the last 5 months my life has changed so much. I feel as though I have my life back. I have started oil painting which I wanted to do when I retired and lost over a stone of weight. I now attend aquq aerobics twice a week.

In addition I swim 64 lengths each time without stopping inbetween lengths. I took 4 swimming lessons to learn how to do front crawl because I didn't think breast stroke was challenging enough. I have managed 64 lengths with 32 breast stroke and 32 front crawl.

I feel fitter and happier and now look forward to getting up in the morning. I had never heard of Active Lifestyles. I am so glad my GP referred me. The ongoing support is great and encourages the exploration of various health issues. I know that I shall miss the support when it ends but I'm sure I will continue to exercise as long as I am able.
