"7 months pregnant involved in an a RTA!"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital / Accident and emergency

I was involved in a minor road traffic accident while visiting Blackpool. I am 7 months pregnant and brought to the hospital by ambulance as I was having a lot of stomach pain where the seatbelt was. After arriving I was straight into triage then put in the waiting area and told that the doctor would be with me soon.1 hour passed and my partner went to see how much longer as I was very distressed about not feeling the baby move and in a lot of pain, we were told it would be about 1hour and 30 mins as there was 4 people in front of me. We had then been waiting over 3 hours and still no one had come to get me to see if my baby was ok. My partner went and asked again how much longer for myself to be told that I wasn't priority as there was more urgent cases and it would be another 8-10 hours wait and they had put me down the list. This upset me so much as I was pregnant and felt neglected. They just kept saying it was an overspill from the night before that has made them so busy. I asked if I could go to their maternity unit to be seen there to be told no they wouldn't see me as I was brought to a&e. I had no option but to ask my partner to cut our holiday short and take me 4 hours home to our local hospital to be seen as I was really worried about my baby's health. I feel like because I wasn't from the area they never cared about me, I was just left full of worry and stomach pains. Such a disgraceful way for me to be treated!

Thank you for taking the time for providing me with the details of your recent experience whilst accessing our services. I am sorry that we were not able to meet your expectations and wish to assure you that priority of care would not be influenced by where you have come from, I would like to apologies if this is the impression you were given. As you have indicated the A&E department was very busy when you visited and unfortunately the team were not able to see patients within the time frame they would wish to.

I hope that when you returned to your local hospital that things were ok.

If you feel it appropriate and so that we can get further details about what has happened and ensure that your concerns are fully investigated please can you contact our Patient Relations team directly on:

Thank you

Andrew
