"Poor communication on Ward 63"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow

(as a relative),

My partner suffering from IIH (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension). She had to fast for four days because her operation kept getting canceled. We had little to no communication on why this was happening, and I want to know why it's just so poor.

She suffers from severe headaches and needs support. The registrar has not told us what’s going on.

This is no reflection on the ward staff which have been excellent.

I work in a small team within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Part of the team’s role is to support patients and carers through our feedback systems which will help to improve the services we provide. On Patient Opinion, I support Lorna Gray, Patient Experience Public Involvement Project Manager, and Niall McGrogan, Head of Patient Experience Public Involvement.

Dear mikepr78

Thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I am sorry to read about your partner's experience. As you say, it is poor for our patients to receive little or no communication about the care they are receiving and this falls below the standards of care we aim to deliver.

I have already shared your post with the Chief Nurse for Regional Services and they would like to look into what you have shared here further. So that they can do that, with your partner's permission and in keeping with patient confidentiality, can you please email me at Lisa.Ramsay@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with your partner's name, date of birth, CHI number (not essential) and quoting the reference 388768?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes
Lisa

Dear mikepr78

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your partner’s care.

I am very sorry that unfortunately your partner’s operation was cancelled. I understand that this must have been frustrating for your partner and you and this isn’t the level of care we like to deliver to our patients.

I have spoken to the surgeon and they advise that the delays and late cancellations were due a number of urgent, emergency cases being referred. However, this should have been explained to your partner at the time, please accept our apologies for this.

Thank you very much for your kind words regarding the ward staff.

Please pass on my best wishes to your partner.

Craig Broadfoot - Clinical Services Manager - Neurosurgery
