"20 week scan - completely upsetting experience"

About: Basildon University Hospital / Maternity

we had our 20 scan in July (first baby) and was anxious and excited to check all was ok. I have always found the reception staff rude and blunt so today was no different. We were called in by the sonographer who was extremely rude, before I had even got into the room they said 'We might not get all the measurements today so you would need to come back, in fact, we probably wont get them' how would they know that before even scanning me! this was at 8am so not like they were running behind! They then started to scan, my partner was looking at the screen to which they rudely told him off and told him not to look...its his child he has every right, he wasn't talking so not like he was putting them off! anyway after around 10 minutes they said baby was breech so couldn't get everything they needed and I would have to come back as in their words 'sending you for a walk probably wont make a difference' again, how did they know! They asked if we wanted to know the gender to which I advised we had been told it was a boy, their response 'ok' I had to ask them if it definitely was. I spent that whole weekend extremely anxious and in tears and totally ruined what should have been a nice experience for us. I went back last week for them to take the final measurements and the person we had (they scanned me on my 12 week too) was amazing, they were so patient, sent me for a walk and had me jumping around to get baby to move positions, in all we were there around 2.5 hours, they didn't want me to go without checking everything absolutely amazing person!

As I have to have growth scans, I will be complaining about this sonographer as soon as these are completed as I do not want them to make things difficult for me when having these scans given how bad they were previously. People like that should not be doing the job they are in, they have no thought for how anxious people would be feeling! I don't think I would choose to have any further babies at Basildon which is a shame as all the other care I have received so far has been brilliant.

We are very sorry that your experience in the Maternity ultrasound department was not as you would have expected.

This is not the way we would want our patients to feel following an appointment here, and at what is such an exciting time.

If you would like us to explore this further please contact our PALS team on 01268 524900 ext 4441
