"My husband's bowel surgery problems at RDGH"

About: Rotherham Hospital / Colorectal surgery Rotherham PCT

(as a relative),

My husband went into B4 for keyhole surgery to remove a polyp (which after a 2 week wait was told it was cancerous), told a 4 day stay.

Four week later 2 stone lighter was sent home with a colostomy (probably permanent) operated on twice by consultant, second time gave him an ileostomy, third time (different surgeon took over) gave him the colostomy, had pelvic abscess due to anastomotic leak, then had pseudomonas (urine infection).

Some nurses were marvelous, some indifferent, I wanted to formally complain but my husband said he could only cope with the situation if he thought it saved his life, while I thought otherwise.

He has been home 5 weeks now and has regained 1 stone & with help from the stoma nurse connected to the delivery firm (hospital stoma nurses were unable to do home visits) has begun to accept things, but I would not be able to recommend RDGH.

Dear LL

Thank you for sharing your comments with us and we are most concerned to hear about your husband's experience at Rotherham Hospital.

Without knowing who he is and his clinical details it is hard for us to comment in any meaningful way here and despite your husband not wanting to "complain" we would urge him to reconsider (we do need his consent). We would appreciate a phone call on 01709 304461 so we can investigate the concerns in more detail and make sure we learn from your experience.

We have passed the concerns on to the team in general surgery and the matron there would be very keen to talk to your husband, particularly regarding the 'indifferent' nursing he received.

If you feel able, please do get in touch.
